The wonderful utilization of the verb do in our flexible English Language is considered meaningless according to the Linguist and author, John McWhorter. He explains this by using comparisons to other languages in his book, “Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue”. He also mentions the -ing suffix and it’s usage in the English language. He further comments on the distinctions that the English language presents from its sister languages in the Germanic branch of Indo- European languages. Lastly, he emphasizes on the striking similarities that English has with two of the Celtic Languages, Welsh and Cornish, Surprisingly, Welsh also has this “meaningless” do.
